We, the adults, are so often the boundary-setters, the definers of the safe zones, the keepers of the time and of the rules. “Hold my hand while we cross the street,” “don’t run with scissors,” “put that stick down,” “go down the slide instead of up the slide,” “put your clothes back on.” It seems never-ending. But taking risks is incredibly important in childhood! Through risky play, children learn how to push themselves, they gain confidence, they figure out that they can do more than they originally thought they could. This is an irreplaceable form of play and education.
Take a step back, ask yourself if you are correcting something for your benefit or for theirs. They may scrape a knee, but what they gain from it could be more valuable than yet another reminder from you.
